PROJECT BRIEF

Lux is a Virtual Reality simulation that places players in a fantasy situation where their survival instincts and abilities to overcome natural obstacles are tested. In our game, players navigate through an underground environment filled with strange figures that lurk in the shadows. The ultimate goal is for the player to escape the location to safety, but a large obstacle remains in their way: the player character cannot step out of the light.

In the beginning of the narrative, the player meets a large but friendly beast who helps them throughout their journey. This beast explains to them that they are not within a safe place, as monsters (who aren’t as friendly as he) lurk in the dark, ready to attack the player if they wander into their territory. The game world consists of four stages. In each stage, the player works together with their beastly sidekick to solve puzzles that will progress them into the next area. An example of such a puzzle would include finding and telling the beast to knock down a log over a ledge that the player could then walk on to get to the next lit area.

While the player cannot walk into the dark areas of the map, mechanics will exist that will allow the player to direct their sidekick to do things in darker areas that will help the player progress. In the meantime, puzzles also exist in the light that the player would walk around to solve for themselves; perhaps the player will have to look through bushes for a gem that helps to unlock a door to a cave, or they will need to turn a handle in a specific pattern to activate a drawbridge. The game will also be filled with lore and evidence that the player can discover in order to acquire information about their player character’s origins and how they got trapped in this mystical underground environment. Players can acquire these pieces of evidence by looking at certain areas for a certain amount of time and triggering a discussion or cutscene, or by simply finding evidence in different areas of the map.

In terms of motion, each lit stage of the game remains the size of the playing area that the player has in real life so that they can move freely and stay as immersed as possible in the experience. Players will use gaze and their controllers to grab and interact with things within their environment. Overall, Lux aims to provide players with the experience of an extreme escape room, placing the users in an environment that supplies awe, but remains convincing enough that it never breaks immersion.

Requirements: 10x10ft gameplay space for our users to walk around
